The importance of chromium for the human body

First of all, it is worth mentioning that chromium is a trace element, which means that it is present in our body in small amounts. Although chromium is classified as a micronutrient, it is necessary for the proper course and regulation of metabolic reactions in the human body. Chromium occurs in various oxidation states, but its natural compounds occur in the III oxidation state - and in this form we can find chromium in various types of food products (e.g. whole grain products, egg yolks, asparagus, yeast) and dietary supplements. Chrome - for who?

First of all, it should be clarified that as regards chromium in relation to dietary supplements, two conclusions have been formulated. First, chromium contributes to the maintenance of normal macronutrient metabolism. As for glucose, chromium helps to maintain its proper level in the blood. The above is worth bearing in mind if you want to supplement your daily chromium supplementation. According to available scientific sources (Jurkowska et al., 2019), it has been observed that an increased demand for chromium may appear, for example, in times of physiological stress, or in active people after strenuous physical exercise.

Chromium for physically active people?

Williams M. H., in a publication from 2005, states that chromium is an insulin cofactor, and its theoretical ergogenic effect is based on the role of insulin in facilitating the transport of BCAAs to the muscles.

Chromium action

This mineral is a component of RNA and is potentially involved in stabilizing its structure. It has been observed that chromium plays its role in activating the insulin receptor, which has the effect of increasing the sensitivity of cells to insulin. Already in the fifties of the last century, attention was drawn to the supporting role of chromium in glucose metabolism. It is included in the ingredients (next to nicotinic acid, glutamic acid, glycine and cysteine) of the so-called Glucose Tolerance Factor (GTF). Chromium in the form of a glucose tolerance factor in the carbohydrate metabolism increases the number of insulin receptors and (as mentioned above) activates the insulin receptor (through reactions).
